Classical conditioning learns a predictive relationship between stimuli. Operant conditioning learns a relationship between behaviour and consequence. The quickest way to avoid errors is to identify what occurs before behaviour, what behaviour occurs, and what follows it.

Classical conditioning: map the sequence

Before conditioning:

  • unconditioned stimulus (UCS) naturally elicits a response
  • unconditioned response (UCR) is the unlearned response
  • neutral stimulus (NS) does not initially elicit the target response

During conditioning, the NS is paired with the UCS. After learning, the former NS becomes the conditioned stimulus (CS) and elicits a conditioned response (CR).

The UCR and CR may look similar, but their causes differ. If food produces salivation before learning, salivation to food is the UCR; salivation to a bell after pairing is the CR.

Generalisation, discrimination, extinction and recovery

Stimulus generalisation is responding to stimuli similar to the CS. Stimulus discrimination is responding differently when stimuli predict different outcomes.

Extinction occurs when the CS is repeatedly presented without the UCS and the CR weakens. Spontaneous recovery is the reappearance of an extinguished CR after a rest interval without new CS–UCS pairings. It is not “reinforcement starts again”.

Little Albert is used to illustrate learned fear: an initially neutral object was paired with an aversive noise, and fear later occurred to the object and similar stimuli. Modern evaluation must recognise weak controls, uncertain reconstruction, limited generalisability and serious ethical concerns.

Operant conditioning: behaviour changes with consequence

Consequences are classified on two axes:

  • positive means something is added
  • negative means something is removed
  • reinforcement increases future behaviour
  • punishment decreases future behaviour

Negative reinforcement is not punishment. The defining question is whether the behaviour becomes more likely.

The Skinner box

A Skinner box controls cues and consequences while recording an animal's operant behaviour. A lever press or key peck can produce food, remove an aversive stimulus or have no programmed consequence. Researchers can measure response rate and change reinforcement schedules.

Generalisation occurs when similar cues evoke the learned response; discrimination develops when only a specific cue signals reinforcement. Extinction occurs when the response no longer produces reinforcement and decreases. Spontaneous recovery can occur after a rest interval.

Worked example: classify by function

Compare the two theories

Classical conditioning focuses on elicited responses and stimulus prediction. Operant conditioning focuses on emitted behaviour and its consequences. Both are behaviourist because they emphasise observable relationships and learning through the environment, though cognition and biological preparedness can refine the explanation.

Conditioned immune responses show that classical conditioning can influence physiological as well as overt behavioural responses. Applications to schooling, employment, childrearing and marketing require attention to ethics, autonomy and unintended effects.
