Build the psychological model
Sleep is an actively regulated sequence, not a uniform loss of consciousness. Across a typical night, NREM and REM states recur in ultradian cycles while circadian timing changes sleep propensity across roughly 24 hours. Light information reaching the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus influences pineal melatonin secretion; homeostatic sleep pressure rises with time awake. Restoration and evolutionary theories explain different features and should be compared by their predictions.
Psychological science separates a construct from the way it is measured. The mechanism for this lesson is Circadian timing and homeostatic sleep pressure jointly regulate sleep. The most useful evidence is EEG, eye movement, muscle tone, stage timing and awakenings. Neither a construct label nor a brain image explains a result by itself; the response must show how an operational measure connects to a theory prediction.

These ideas should not be memorised as isolated theorist names or definitions. Compare the mechanism each account proposes, the observation it predicts, and the result that would count against it. When two theories can explain the same surface result, a stronger investigation changes a condition that makes their predictions diverge.
Trace the proposed mechanism
- The circadian system uses environmental light cues to align an internal rhythm with local day and night.
- With prolonged wakefulness, homeostatic pressure accumulates; circadian alerting can temporarily oppose it before habitual bedtime.
- After sleep onset, brain, eye and muscle patterns organise recurring NREM and REM stages with changing proportions.
- The sequence supports multiple proposed functions, so theory evaluation asks which observations each account predicts and where it remains incomplete.
Read each arrow critically. Does it name an observed association, a proposed causal process or an interpretation? Those claims require different designs. The lesson's responsible conclusion is Sleep stages cycle while their proportions change across the night. Its boundary is equally important: A stage pattern does not by itself prove one evolutionary purpose of sleep.
Worked evidence
The worked conclusion identifies what was measured before explaining it. It avoids mind-reading, biological determinism, diagnosis from classroom evidence and universal claims from a group average. If numerical evidence is supplied, use the value and comparison; if qualitative evidence is supplied, identify the coding or interpretive boundary.
Investigate it properly
Research question. Does evening bright-light timing shift reported sleep onset and morning alertness?
Design. Use a counterbalanced, ethically safe dim-light versus specified bright-light schedule, hold caffeine and bedtime instructions constant, and collect objective light exposure plus sleep diaries.
Evidence. Compare within-person sleep onset, wake timing and alertness across several nights rather than one night, reporting adherence and variability.
Limitation and improvement. Self-reported sleep onset is imprecise and expectation may affect ratings. Add actigraphy where feasible, use an active comparison and avoid extrapolating to treatment without clinical evidence.
A defensible investigation should use polysomnography across enough nights to separate pattern from first-night effects. Reliability asks whether the evidence is consistent under comparable conditions. Validity asks whether the method supports the intended inference. A larger sample can improve precision, but it cannot repair a confound, an invalid measure or a conclusion that exceeds the design.
Ethical reasoning
Protect privacy and manage risks from sleep restriction or clinical findings. Ethical quality is not a paragraph added after the method. It shapes recruitment, consent, risk, privacy, withdrawal, data handling, reporting and the consequences of applying a finding to individuals or groups.
Repair the inference
Melatonin participates in circadian timing; stage functions overlap; theories operate at different explanatory levels and are evaluated through discriminating predictions rather than forced exclusivity.
The tempting overclaim is A sleeper moves through each stage once in a fixed sequence. Replace it with the supported inference and explicitly preserve a stage pattern does not by itself prove one evolutionary purpose of sleep. Good psychological writing can be confident about a measured pattern while remaining cautious about mechanism, diagnosis and generalisation.
Transfer to an unfamiliar study
Use circadian timing, homeostatic pressure and stage architecture to predict jet-lag or shift-work patterns, then distinguish a descriptive prediction from a clinical treatment recommendation.
Use this five-part routine:
- Define the construct and its operational measure.
- Identify the design, comparison and observed result.
- Trace or compare the proposed mechanism.
- Evaluate validity, reliability, sample, ethics and one alternative explanation.
- State a bounded conclusion that could be revised by new evidence.
