Choose a commercial question bank when you need better topic filtering, mixed sets, answer feedback or a record of your mistakes. What makes a question bank worth paying for?

Official papers already provide high-quality exam practice. A commercial bank needs to save meaningful time or improve the feedback loop.

Look for five things:

  1. Provenance. Can you tell whether a question is from an official past paper, written by the provider or generated by AI?
  2. Current state alignment. Does the question match your actual syllabus, exam structure and permitted content?
  3. Useful filters. Can you narrow by subject, topic, syllabus point, year, paper or difficulty without losing context?
  4. Feedback. Does the answer help you identify what to change, not merely reveal the final result?
  5. Review. Can you find the mistake again and practise a related question later?

A huge question count is not enough. Ten well-chosen questions with reviewed errors can improve a weak topic more than fifty random questions completed once.

1. Official past-exam libraries: the essential free source

Australia's senior assessment systems are state-based. Use the library for your curriculum:

These pages are the best evidence of the official paper, wording and marking material available for your course. Their weakness is convenience: topic-level filtering, mixed practice and error tracking are not usually the main purpose.

4. activATAR: QCE practice with a game layer

activATAR combines QCE notes and practice with streaks, leaderboards and study games. Its current subject page lists sciences, economics, several mathematics subjects and English.

It suits students who do more work when the session is short, visible and competitive. Students wanting a deeper past-paper filtering and mistake-review workflow should compare it directly with Sylligence.

5. Revizi: broad recall practice, not a past-paper replacement

Revizi lists HSC, VCE, QCE, WACE, SACE, TCE and ACT SSC coverage, with nine subjects and more than 250 topics on its public page. Its core format is flashcards, quizzes and spaced repetition.

That is useful question practice, but it answers a different need from an exam bank. Revizi is better for quick retrieval across broad curriculum coverage; an official paper, Sylligence or AusGrader is better when you need the structure and marking demands of an exam response.

6. Leibniz: dedicated maths practice

A better way to use any question bank

Do not begin by selecting the largest possible set. Choose one topic and use a small diagnostic batch. For each error, label the cause:

  • content gap;
  • misread command word;
  • method or reasoning error;
  • incomplete working;
  • weak evidence or explanation;
  • time pressure;
  • careless execution.

Your next practice should match the cause. A content gap needs relearning before another question. A command-word mistake needs comparison between the prompt and marking guide. A timing problem needs a constrained set, not more untimed practice.
