Perception is an evidence-based construction: incoming sensory information constrains what can be perceived, while expectation and context influence how ambiguous information is organised. The safest explanation specifies both the stimulus information and the psychological influence.

Perceptual set
A perceptual set is a readiness to perceive a stimulus in a particular way. It can be influenced by:
- past experience: learned categories and familiar patterns
- context: surrounding information changes interpretation
- motivation: current goals make some cues more salient
- emotion: threat or mood can alter attention and interpretation
- expectation: likely interpretations are activated before all evidence is resolved
Bugelski and Alampay's 1961 ambiguous figure illustrates expectation effects: earlier exposure to related images can bias whether the figure is interpreted as a face or an animal. Frequency and familiarity help build the expectation, but they do not force every observer to report the same perception.
Gestalt organisation
Gestalt principles describe tendencies to organise elements into coherent wholes:

These are descriptive principles, not a claim that the brain consciously applies a checklist.
Depth cues and visual constancies
Binocular cues use both eyes. Retinal disparity arises because each eye receives a slightly different image, especially for near objects. Convergence uses the inward turning of the eyes as distance decreases.
Monocular cues can operate with one eye, including linear perspective, interposition, relative size, texture gradient, height in the visual field, light and shadow, and motion parallax.
Visual constancies support stable perception despite changing retinal input:
- size constancy: perceived size remains relatively stable as distance changes
- shape constancy: perceived shape remains stable as viewing angle changes
- brightness or lightness constancy: perceived surface lightness remains relatively stable across illumination changes
A cue can mislead in a designed illusion because the perceptual system applies a normally useful assumption to an unusual stimulus.
Three broad approaches to perception
A computational approach asks how information is represented and transformed. A constructivist approach emphasises inference from sensory evidence plus prior knowledge. An ecological approach emphasises information directly available in the environment for action.
These approaches frame different questions and can generate competing explanations. Good evaluation asks what each approach explains, what evidence would distinguish them and whether laboratory tasks preserve real-world information.
Culture and perception
Culture can influence experience, learned categories, attention and interpretation. It should not be treated as a fixed biological property of a group. De Bruine, Vredeveldt and van Koppen (2018) provide a current syllabus anchor for visual perception; Patel and Demorest (2013) for auditory perception.
When interpreting cross-cultural data:
- state the measured difference
- inspect task familiarity, language, education and sampling
- avoid assuming all members of a cultural category are identical
- distinguish a group-level trend from an individual prediction
- consider whether the construct and test have equivalent meaning across groups
Earlier studies such as Hudson and Deregowski stimulated further research but must be read in historical and methodological context. Later modification and replication can test whether results depend on materials, procedures or samples.
