Build the psychological model
Motivation directs, energises and sustains behaviour but does not reside in one reward or personality trait. Achievement-goal theory distinguishes task orientation toward mastery from ego orientation toward demonstrating ability. Cognitive-evaluation accounts examine how rewards and feedback affect intrinsic motivation through perceived autonomy and competence. Self-efficacy is belief about capability for a particular action; it combines with outcome expectations about what the action will produce.
Psychological science separates a construct from the way it is measured. The mechanism for this lesson is Goals, value, efficacy, action and feedback form a changing loop. The most useful evidence is Goal commitment, self-efficacy, strategy, progress, wellbeing and performance. Neither a construct label nor a brain image explains a result by itself; the response must show how an operational measure connects to a theory prediction.

These ideas should not be memorised as isolated theorist names or definitions. Compare the mechanism each account proposes, the observation it predicts, and the result that would count against it. When two theories can explain the same surface result, a stronger investigation changes a condition that makes their predictions diverge.
Trace the proposed mechanism
- A person appraises goal value, expected outcome, capability and autonomy within a social context.
- Orientation shapes attention: mastery directs effort to strategy and improvement, while ego focus heightens comparison and threat under some conditions.
- A clear goal and feedback guide strategy adjustment; successful progress can raise efficacy and positive affect, sustaining effort.
- Failure interpreted as fixed inability, controlling reward or impossible workload can reduce autonomy or efficacy and create a negative cycle.
Read each arrow critically. Does it name an observed association, a proposed causal process or an interpretation? Those claims require different designs. The lesson's responsible conclusion is Goal difficulty alone is unlikely to sustain effective motivation. Its boundary is equally important: Motivation is context-sensitive and cannot be inferred from output alone.
Worked evidence
The worked conclusion identifies what was measured before explaining it. It avoids mind-reading, biological determinism, diagnosis from classroom evidence and universal claims from a group average. If numerical evidence is supplied, use the value and comparison; if qualitative evidence is supplied, identify the coding or interpretive boundary.
Investigate it properly
Research question. Does mastery-framed feedback improve persistence on a difficult learning task compared with rank-framed feedback?
Design. Randomly assign equivalent feedback after a baseline task, standardise difficulty, measure persistence, strategy change, performance, efficacy and affect, and debrief the comparison framing.
Evidence. Test change and mediation patterns, including whether feedback altered efficacy or perceived autonomy, and report quality as well as time-on-task.
Limitation and improvement. Demand characteristics and artificial tasks limit workplace or classroom transfer. Use credible scripts, follow-up and field replication without tying consequential rewards to experimental condition.
A defensible investigation should compare goal conditions while measuring capability, feedback and motivational orientation. Reliability asks whether the evidence is consistent under comparable conditions. Validity asks whether the method supports the intended inference. A larger sample can improve precision, but it cannot repair a confound, an invalid measure or a conclusion that exceeds the design.
Ethical reasoning
Monitor pressure, fairness, autonomy and unintended gaming or harm. Ethical quality is not a paragraph added after the method. It shapes recruitment, consent, risk, privacy, withdrawal, data handling, reporting and the consequences of applying a finding to individuals or groups.
Repair the inference
Motivational effects depend on context and mechanism. Efficacy affects choice and persistence but cannot replace skill or opportunity; goals require feedback, commitment, capability and safeguards against tunnel vision.
The tempting overclaim is Harder goals always create more effort and better performance. Replace it with the supported inference and explicitly preserve motivation is context-sensitive and cannot be inferred from output alone. Good psychological writing can be confident about a measured pattern while remaining cautious about mechanism, diagnosis and generalisation.
Transfer to an unfamiliar study
For an unfamiliar study or workplace strategy, identify orientation, autonomy, competence, efficacy, outcome expectation and goal structure, then predict both intended performance and possible unintended behaviour.
Use this five-part routine:
- Define the construct and its operational measure.
- Identify the design, comparison and observed result.
- Trace or compare the proposed mechanism.
- Evaluate validity, reliability, sample, ethics and one alternative explanation.
- State a bounded conclusion that could be revised by new evidence.
