Build the psychological model

Intelligence theories are models that select different evidence and purposes. Psychometrics describes covariance among test performances; information-processing explains mechanisms such as speed, working resources and strategy; Sternberg emphasises analytical, creative and practical adaptation; Gardner proposes multiple relatively distinct intelligences; Goleman foregrounds recognising and regulating emotion. Comparing them requires construct definitions and testable predictions, not declaring the broadest account most humane or the narrowest most scientific.

Psychological science separates a construct from the way it is measured. The mechanism for this lesson is Genes and environments transact while theories define different abilities. The most useful evidence is Reliability, predictive validity, measurement invariance and contextual experience. Neither a construct label nor a brain image explains a result by itself; the response must show how an operational measure connects to a theory prediction.

These ideas should not be memorised as isolated theorist names or definitions. Compare the mechanism each account proposes, the observation it predicts, and the result that would count against it. When two theories can explain the same surface result, a stronger investigation changes a condition that makes their predictions diverge.

Trace the proposed mechanism

  1. Define what each theory counts as intelligent performance and the level at which it explains differences.
  2. Derive a distinct prediction or measurement strategy rather than matching examples after the event.
  3. Test reliability, construct overlap, incremental prediction and cross-cultural measurement equivalence.
  4. Integrate genetic and environmental evidence as interaction and covariance, avoiding a forced either–or conclusion.

Read each arrow critically. Does it name an observed association, a proposed causal process or an interpretation? Those claims require different designs. The lesson's responsible conclusion is Construct meaning, language and validation may not transfer across contexts. Its boundary is equally important: Heritability within a population does not state immutability or explain group differences.

Worked evidence

The worked conclusion identifies what was measured before explaining it. It avoids mind-reading, biological determinism, diagnosis from classroom evidence and universal claims from a group average. If numerical evidence is supplied, use the value and comparison; if qualitative evidence is supplied, identify the coding or interpretive boundary.

Investigate it properly

Research question. Does a proposed practical-intelligence measure predict a real-world criterion beyond a conventional reasoning score?

Design. Use preregistered, independently scored measures with a diverse sample, control relevant prior opportunity and test incremental prediction on a held-out dataset.

Evidence. Report reliability, correlation structure, added predictive accuracy, calibration and subgroup measurement equivalence, including null or contradictory findings.

Limitation and improvement. The criterion may embed cultural advantage and common-method bias. Use multiple outcomes and qualitative review of task meaning rather than treating prediction of an unfair criterion as validation.

A defensible investigation should compare theory-specific predictions using culturally validated measures. Reliability asks whether the evidence is consistent under comparable conditions. Validity asks whether the method supports the intended inference. A larger sample can improve precision, but it cannot repair a confound, an invalid measure or a conclusion that exceeds the design.

Ethical reasoning

Avoid biological determinism and examine consequences for assessed groups. Ethical quality is not a paragraph added after the method. It shapes recruitment, consent, risk, privacy, withdrawal, data handling, reporting and the consequences of applying a finding to individuals or groups.

Repair the inference

Theories require distinct validated constructs; preferred activity is not evidence of a fixed learning channel; emotional-intelligence claims need reliable measurement; heritability is conditional population statistics, not personal destiny.

The tempting overclaim is The lower score proves lower inherited intelligence. Replace it with the supported inference and explicitly preserve heritability within a population does not state immutability or explain group differences. Good psychological writing can be confident about a measured pattern while remaining cautious about mechanism, diagnosis and generalisation.

Transfer to an unfamiliar study

When a new intelligence framework is advertised, compare its definition, operational measure, falsifiable prediction, overlap with established constructs, cultural assumptions and incremental practical value.

Use this five-part routine:

  1. Define the construct and its operational measure.
  2. Identify the design, comparison and observed result.
  3. Trace or compare the proposed mechanism.
  4. Evaluate validity, reliability, sample, ethics and one alternative explanation.
  5. State a bounded conclusion that could be revised by new evidence.
