  4. Create responses that communicate meaning to suit the intended audience, context and purpose, e.g. using paragraph responses
  5. Create responses that communicate meaning to suit the intended audience, context and purpose, e.g. using visual representations (diagrams, graphs, tables, analytical tools or decision-making matrix)
  6. Create responses that communicate meaning to suit the intended audience, context and purpose, e.g. using extended responses (written, spoken or multimodal presentation).
  7. Describe business facts and characteristics of a business situation relating to the case study business, including the stage of the business life cycle.
  8. Describe business facts and characteristics of the internal, external operating and macro environmental factors.
  9. Explain the strategic planning implemented by the case study business.
  10. Analyse and interpret the business situation by selecting data and information relating to the strategic planning for the case study business using a SWOT analysis. Interpret a relationship or trend in the SWOT analysis to draw conclusions about the implications for the business.
  11. Evaluate the strategic planning implemented by the case study business to make a decision and propose a recommendation/s using business criteria.
  12. Create an extended response (written, spoken or multimodal) to communicate strategic planning to external stakeholders, including visual representations and in-text referencing (if appropriate).

Turn case evidence and SWOT relationships into criteria-based strategic recommendations for a defined stakeholder audience. This note develops the connected model and the evidence needed to use it, rather than reducing the syllabus to a list of terms.

Build the decision model

A Business response moves through distinct cognitions. Description selects significant facts and characteristics. Explanation makes concept relationships clear. Analysis selects data, uses an analytical tool and interprets a relationship or trend to draw a case implication. Evaluation applies business criteria to make a judgment, decision and recommendation. Communication shapes that reasoning for audience, context and purpose using purposeful visuals and traceable referencing. Skipping a link produces assertion rather than a defensible report.

The model becomes useful when it changes a decision. In this lesson, the central diagnosis is The recommendation has lost the evidence-analysis-criterion chain. That diagnosis is not a slogan: it must be supported by dated case facts, analytical relationships, criteria and alternative outcomes. Keep the organisation's purpose and time horizon visible, because the same fact can have a different implication for a commercial firm, mission organisation or government-owned enterprise.

Connect the ideas

1. A SWOT cell is not analysis until two or more facts are connected and the implication for the business situation is interpreted

A SWOT cell is not analysis until two or more facts are connected and the implication for the business situation is interpreted.

2. Criteria must be used to judge, not mentioned after the decision

Criteria must be used to judge, not mentioned after the decision. A perceptive judgment can recognise that an option performs differently across criteria.

3. External stakeholders may need context and assurance that insiders already possess; visuals should reduce decision effort rather than decorate the report

External stakeholders may need context and assurance that insiders already possess; visuals should reduce decision effort rather than decorate the report.

Do not turn a framework into a list. Explain a relationship: what changed, which capability or stakeholder is affected, why the effect matters, and what that means for the available options. The relevant decision criterion here is Effectiveness, efficiency, competitiveness and stakeholder satisfaction. State it before ranking alternatives so that a preferred option is not chosen first and justified afterwards.

Trace the business reasoning

  1. Annotate the case for significant stage, environment, planning and stakeholder evidence.
  2. Construct SWOT from evidence and interpret the most decision-relevant relationship or trend.
  3. Evaluate strategic planning against criteria, alternatives, feasibility and stakeholder consequences.
  4. Present a prioritised recommendation with evidence, action, owner, measure, timeframe and limitation.

Read the sequence backward as a quality check. The proposed action is rebuild each recommendation backward from a named criterion. It should trace back to the final implication, the analytical relationship and the original case evidence. If one link is missing, the response has jumped from description to recommendation.

Worked case

The conclusion is deliberately bounded. It does not claim that one tool has discovered a universal strategy. It applies relevant evidence, acknowledges a trade-off and reaches the next defensible decision. In a report, follow the judgement with responsibility, resources, timing and the safeguard: assign an owner, kpi, timeframe and review trigger.

Investigate the case properly

Question. Which report structure lets an external stakeholder verify the decision most efficiently?

Method. Provide the same evidence in narrative, table and annotated SWOT forms; ask readers to identify source, relationship, criterion and recommendation basis.

Evidence. Measure accuracy and time, then collect which visual or section made each reasoning link easiest to trace.

Limitation. Reader familiarity affects performance. Counterbalance formats and treat faster reading as one communication outcome, not proof of deeper understanding.

Source quality is part of the analysis. Record who published the evidence, when the underlying observation was made, the units, population or market boundary, and whether an interest may shape the claim. A current webpage can contain old data, while a firm statement may be valuable evidence of its plan but weak independent evidence that the plan works.

Repair the reasoning

Selectivity, interpreted relationships, criteria-based judgment and implementable action distinguish strategic reasoning from description.

The tempting shortcut in this lesson is add more business terminology to make the report persuasive. Replace it with the evidence boundary: A polished report cannot rescue analysis that is unsupported by evidence. A limitation does not make the analysis useless; it defines the circumstances in which the judgement should be monitored or changed.

Transfer and communicate

When the audience changes from owner to lender, employee or community stakeholder, preserve the evidence chain but change context, emphasis, risk and explanation.

Use this compact response routine:

  1. Define the organisation, decision and time horizon.
  2. Select significant evidence rather than copying every stimulus fact.
  3. Apply the tool and explain at least one relationship or interrelationship.
  4. Compare feasible alternatives against a stated business criterion.
  5. Recommend an action with an owner, KPI and review trigger.
