QCAA official coverage - Business 2025 v1.3

Exact syllabus points covered

  1. Describe business facts and characteristics of a business situation relating to a business in the seed stage of the business life cycle.
  2. Describe business facts and characteristics of the internal, external operating and macro environmental factors.
  3. Explain the application of the innovation theory implemented by the case study business.
  4. Analyse and interpret the business situation by selecting data and information relating to the macro environment using a PEST analysis. Interpret a relationship or trend in the PEST analysis to draw conclusions about the implications for the business idea.
  5. Evaluate the viability of the business idea to make a decision and propose a recommendation/s using business criteria.
  6. Create an extended response (written, spoken or multimodal presentation) to communicate a business idea to a potential investor, including visual representations and in-text referencing (if appropriate).

Integrate description, innovation theory, PEST analysis and criteria into an evidence-led investor recommendation. This note develops the connected model and the evidence needed to use it, rather than reducing the syllabus to a list of terms.

Build the decision model

An investor communication is not promotional copy. It defines the seed-stage situation, identifies the relevant environment, explains how innovation creates value, interprets PEST evidence and evaluates viability against return, execution, risk and stakeholder conditions. Claims must trace to sources; projections must expose assumptions; visuals must show a decision-relevant relationship. The final recommendation can seek staged funding tied to evidence rather than pretending uncertainty has disappeared.

The model becomes useful when it changes a decision. In this lesson, the central diagnosis is The proposal confuses projections with evidence and understates downside. That diagnosis is not a slogan: it must be supported by traction, assumptions, unit economics, execution milestones and sensitivities. Keep the organisation's purpose and time horizon visible, because the same fact can have a different implication for a commercial firm, mission organisation or government-owned enterprise.

Connect the ideas

1. A case fact is significant because of its relationship to the decision, not because it sounds impressive

A case fact is significant because of its relationship to the decision, not because it sounds impressive. Evidence selection should include adverse as well as favourable information.

2. Innovation theory explains how value or market structure changes; it does not certify demand, protection or founder capability

Innovation theory explains how value or market structure changes; it does not certify demand, protection or founder capability.

3. Investors differ in return horizon, risk tolerance and strategic purpose

Investors differ in return horizon, risk tolerance and strategic purpose. Audience-aware communication changes emphasis without changing the underlying evidence.

Do not turn a framework into a list. Explain a relationship: what changed, which capability or stakeholder is affected, why the effect matters, and what that means for the available options. The relevant decision criterion here is Risk-adjusted viability and credible execution. State it before ranking alternatives so that a preferred option is not chosen first and justified afterwards.

Trace the business reasoning

  1. Describe the business, seed-stage conditions, environment and investor decision.
  2. Explain the innovation mechanism and support it with customer and capability evidence.
  3. Use PEST to interpret a relationship or trend, then evaluate viability with criteria and sensitivity.
  4. Communicate a staged recommendation with use of funds, milestones, risks, references and review conditions.

Read the sequence backward as a quality check. The proposed action is show base, upside and downside cases with explicit assumptions. It should trace back to the final implication, the analytical relationship and the original case evidence. If one link is missing, the response has jumped from description to recommendation.

Worked case

The conclusion is deliberately bounded. It does not claim that one tool has discovered a universal strategy. It applies relevant evidence, acknowledges a trade-off and reaches the next defensible decision. In a report, follow the judgement with responsibility, resources, timing and the safeguard: disclose uncertainty, dependencies and what would stop further funding.

Investigate the case properly

Question. Which investor visual most transparently communicates upside and downside without false precision?

Method. Compare a single forecast line with a three-scenario chart that exposes return rate, price and cleaning-cost assumptions.

Evidence. Ask readers to identify the decisive assumption, downside exposure and funding gate; audit whether source data and units are visible.

Limitation. Scenario bounds remain judgments. Use documented ranges, avoid probability claims without evidence and disclose omitted dependencies.

Source quality is part of the analysis. Record who published the evidence, when the underlying observation was made, the units, population or market boundary, and whether an interest may shape the claim. A current webpage can contain old data, while a firm statement may be valuable evidence of its plan but weak independent evidence that the plan works.

Repair the reasoning

Credibility comes from traceable evidence, explicit assumptions, balanced risks and a controlled path for learning; unsupported certainty increases investor risk.

The tempting shortcut in this lesson is emphasise only the largest addressable-market number. Replace it with the evidence boundary: A forecast is a conditional model, not observed demand. A limitation does not make the analysis useless; it defines the circumstances in which the judgement should be monitored or changed.

Transfer and communicate

Adapt the same evidence chain for a social investor, lender or strategic partner by changing decision criteria and funding structure, not by hiding inconvenient facts.

Use this compact response routine:

  1. Define the organisation, decision and time horizon.
  2. Select significant evidence rather than copying every stimulus fact.
  3. Apply the tool and explain at least one relationship or interrelationship.
  4. Compare feasible alternatives against a stated business criterion.
  5. Recommend an action with an owner, KPI and review trigger.
