ISMG vs EAMG: QCAA Marking Guides Explained
A simple explanation of the difference between QCAA ISMGs and EAMGs, and how students should use each one for assignments and external exams.

QCAA students hear two similar terms: ISMG and EAMG. They both describe how assessment evidence is judged, but they are used in different contexts.
ISMGs are for internal assessment
An ISMG is an instrument-specific marking guide. It is used for internal assessments such as investigations, assignments, projects and performances.
Use the ISMG while drafting. It tells you what evidence the marker needs to see for that specific assessment instrument. In a science assignment, this might include analysing evidence, evaluating limitations and justifying conclusions. In a maths PSMT, it might include formulating, solving, evaluating and communicating.
EAMGs are for external assessment
An EAMG is an external assessment marking guide. It is used for external exams that are developed and marked by QCAA.
Use the EAMG after timed practice. It helps you understand how exam responses are matched to marking decisions. For English, for example, the EAMG helps students check knowledge application, organisation and textual features in analytical essays.
How students should use them differently
Use ISMGs before and during drafting:
- plan sections around the assessed objectives
- check whether each criterion has visible evidence
- revise feedback against the exact descriptor
- avoid overworking low-value sections
Use EAMGs during exam revision:
- mark practice answers after writing them
- identify patterns in missing marks
- learn the level of detail expected
- practise matching command terms and question wording
The main mistake
The common mistake is treating the marking guide as something to look at right before submission. It should shape the work from the start.
The best question is not "does this sound good?" It is "where does this response show the evidence the marking guide is asking for?"

Frequently asked questions
How should I use this guide?
Use this guide to understand the study or assessment decision, then check the linked official sources and apply the advice to your current QCE subject, task or revision block.
Should I still check official Queensland sources?
Yes. Sylligence guides are study support resources. Use QCAA, myQCE and QTAC sources for official syllabus details, assessment conditions, ATAR eligibility and final rules.
